Internettastic!

James Kellerman

Screenshot above is of a robot on Mars using twitter to get involved with Talk Like a Pirate Day. That may be the most awesomely internety thing ever. (So its really some guy or girl in a lab somewhere but its still very cool)

You can follow both the mars rovers and the Phoenix lander on twitter.

Winter Wants

James Kellerman

These look awesome first time I have been excited about a pair of goggles in a long time.

They also make this incredibly cool looking body armour. Think I might be a bit more keen to go for those corked 7's in this. Or more realistically feel like a super hero and jump on all my friends.

More cool stuff here POC

Hood to Coasst

James Kellerman

I have been meaning to write something on the Hood to Coast relay experience but haven't found the energy having used it all to get over the bloody coastal hills on route.

For those who don't know anything about Hood to Coast it is on one of the largest running relay races in the world. It starts off at Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood at 6000 ft and finishes 197 miles later at Seaside on the Oregon coast. You compete usually as teams of 12 and in our case in the mixed category they had to be 6 men and 6 women.

We started the race early Friday morning and were expected to finish Saturday afternoon having run through the night. Teams split into two 6 in each minibus. You don't really interact much with the other bus at all so you could make up a team out of two groups of 6 that don't know each other. The main thing to get right is who you get in your bus. The first two legs of the

Fox helping literacy everywhere

This is a screenshot from the front page of Fox News web site. To the best of my knowledge and Merriam-Websters there is no such word as slained, it should be slain. How does this get onto the front page of a major news propaganda outlet.

Scooba 0 : Floor 1

James Kellerman

I decided now that we live in the future I would buy a robot to clean my apartment. So far the robot revolution has not been plain sailing. I ordered a re-manufatured iRobot Scooba from Amazon.com. It turns up in a box looking like its been attacked with an axe, and surely enough upon opening the box I find one sad looking heavily damaged robot. Back to Amazon with it and a replacement arrives a couple of days later. This one appears to be in fine robo health. I charge it up till its batteries content and kick it off on a cleaning tour of my apartment. After 10 minutes or so of zig zagging around it comes to a halt under my bed and demands more juice. Ever the obedient robot master I plug it in and 3 hours later it stops blinking at me. This unfortunately is the last thing it ever does. It no longer will switch on clean or perform any robo cleaning tasks of any kind. I am now faced with either amazon returns or iRobot. I think I know which will be easier to deal with...

It's gone back to Amazon for good.

Intelligent Angel Movies - Seriously

James Kellerman

Fell across this whilst reading the excellent badscience.net . A couple of alternative health practitioners have started making movies under the studio title Intelligent Angel Movies. Here is a little about the production process from the site.

I-AM and Desire are among the first to take advantage of the newly released Red-Cam. This will enable I-AM to ensure the highest quality available in the shortest time possible. Traditional scripts are replaced by a more organic flow, guided and nurtured by Desire's brilliant ideas producing some of the finest, most spontaneous acting seen on movie screens today. Traditional pre-production and tedious, laborious set-ups and shoots are replaced by studios and multiple cameras always set-up and ready to go.

And now here is one of their trailers:

Wiki - Factoid

James Kellerman

Looking up the lyrics to the Gilbert & Sullivan, Major-Generals Song I came across this wonderful factoid from wikipedia.

For example, The Muppet Show (season 3, episode 61)[5] staged a duet of the song with guest host Gilda Radner and a seven-foot tall talking carrot. Radner requested a seven-foot tall talking parrot, but was misheard.

AWESOME.

Hanlon's Razor

James Kellerman

I am a big fan of Occam's Razor as a tool for examining events but I may have a new facourite Hanlon's Razor:

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

This popped up in reference to a news story about metal spikes that were found in the bottom of a Seattle pond. This sharp metal spikes had injured someone and the Internet went hysterical, terrorism, child molesters, end of the civilized world etc. It turns out these metal spikes were originally "U" shaped hooks used to hold down plastic sheeting installed by the parks department 20 years ago and the U portions had since rusted away leaving a spike.

Prizes should also be awarded for best press conference line by the Seattle Parks Department.

"I'm sorry it was us."

New New iPhone

James Kellerman

Apple replaced my iPhone that was cracking. It came with 3A347 as the firmware. My biggest gripe now is the insane length of time it takes to backup the phone each time you connect it to itunes. It was taking well over an hour and has to restart if interrupted by a call.

iPhone battery 3A345 vs 3A347

James Kellerman

I did a restore on my iPhone and iTunes installed the slightly newer 3A347 firmware which very anecdotally seems to have improved the standby battery life. My phone had been losing about 70% of its battery life just on standby overnight. with the 3A347 firmware it appears to be just losing 5-10%. I don't know if it's made any difference to the in use battery life., and apps still crash and on occasion the phone has rebooted itself for the fun of it.

Human Quantum Energy - Karadic's web site

James Kellerman

This is Radavan Karadic's web site for his Human Quantum Energy alternative health practice. There is some awesome design work to behold there, unfortunately there are no more pictures of the beard which has reportedly been shaved off. I think Karadic probably chose alternative medicine as his disguide because its one of the few professions where you require absolutely no qualifications and insane facial here is actually a bonus.

iPhone is cracking

James Kellerman

My iPhone has started to crack around the silent switch. I have taken it back to apple and they have agreed to replace it. Hopefully the replacement also has somewhat better battery life.
