Public Library of Science

James Kellerman

The Public Library of Science appears to me to be a great example of how science publishing should be done.

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource.

It also provides a synopsis of every article, written for a general audience.

All of the articles are licensed under the excellent creative commons licensing system, in this case allowing:

You are free:
  • to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work
  • to make derivative works
  • to make commercial use of the work
Under the following conditions:
  • by Attribution. You must give the original author credit.

Update:

On the very day I go blogging about this none other than wired news writes on it too.

At least 1,525 journals provide free access, making up 5 to 10 percent of the world's journals. The free journals are gaining influence too: Thomson Scientific, which tracks academic publishing, found they're commonly cited by other journals, suggesting that they're well-read. Meanwhile, other journals are opening their archives to readers for free.

Intel Dual Core reviews are out

James Kellerman

My executive summary, makes a big difference in encoding and rendering application, not much in games or office applications. Should make for a more responsive computing experience with fewer applications "waiting" whilst you complete another task. Interestingly the dual core extreme edition with HyperThreading runs slower in many applications than the regular dual core. Now just waits to see what pricing and availability are like. Oh and to get a job so I can actually afford one!

And probably a dozen more by the end of the day.

..has started a blog of his own, it will probably be just as boring as this one. But if you have a passing interest in lardy kiwis living in London I heartily recommend swinging by now and again.[Link]

Grandmaster Flash

James Kellerman

Back from New Zealand and straight back into the swing of things here in Singapore. Caught Grandmaster Flash DJ'ing at zouk last night. Very impressed by his skills and awesome to catch one of the pioneers of the hip hop scene. Recommend the experience to anyone who is remotely into hip hop.

Politics

James Kellerman

I've been having some great arguments about politics recently, someone suggested that I start to write my thoughts down. I am not sure that I have a lot to add to the debate but, I will start to comment here on more of the things I feel passionate about. Freedom of speech and privacy are the top two topics that get me the most excited along with a fair dollop of alternative science.

Local Celebrity!

James Kellerman

Well I made the local paper anyway. I went to get tickets for the Tiger cup final here in Singapore, playing Indonesia. Anyway long queues and all that the local media turned up and being a whitey they zoomed in for the story of the century! You can read it online here If you need a login I recommend bugmenot.com

The theme was acted out by the team, actually sung, and I got a hamper for being one of the three best suggestions, it had the following Guinness themed items a Guinness telephone!?? Guinness CD Radio, Guinness Beer Tray and of course Guinness.
