Vanity Fair has taken the transcript of Governor Palin's resignation speech and given it to their literary editor as well as the copy and research departments. The result is fascinating. The speech is a perfect example of just about every poor literary practice imaginable. The edits are brutally effective and very educational. Had this been a creative writing class I am pretty sure Palin would have received an F. Link - Vanity Fair

A great insight into hollywood

James Kellerman

This brilliant 20 min presentation by Kevin Smith on writing a script for Superman Returns is a brilliant insight into how messed up things are in Hollywood. It also showcases Smith's great story telling skills. Watch and learn.

Be sure to watch it all the way though to the end

Back in Portland

James Kellerman

Back in Portland after a great trip back to London. I think I must have spent the entire time stuffing myself with home cooked food and beer. The effect of which is best shown with raw data. I have gained 4lbs and 1% body fat since leaving Portland. It seems the UK may be worse for my health than obese America. Of course the food and beer didn't stop me from beating Blair in the 2am drunk arm wrestling show down. Better get back to training bro. Big thanks to all my friends and family for a fantastic trip back, you don't make it easy to leave.

Most geeky moment ever

James Kellerman

Just spent the last 10 minutes using ssh from my iPhone to log into our web server and diagnose some problems. Not the ideal user interface but useable for quick and dirty work. I am finding it hard to see when I would want to carry around a nettop rather than my phone. P.s. This was posted from wordpress on the self same phone.

I have been looking for somewhere to drink my whisky with a nice spherical ice cube. It has nothing to do with the aesthetic and everything to do with physics. A spherical ice "cube" has a much improved surface to volume ratio - this reduces the thermal transfer to the ice and makes it last longer. In essence it allows you to sip your whisky at your leisure without getting it all wet and tasteless. If you are very lucky you can get your whisky or fine bourbon with a spherical ice cube at 50 plates.

So this is my current desk setup. There are four computers; my MacBook pro is the day to day workhorse for email and design work. Then there are two dell Vostro 200's. One runs Vista and Vista 64 in a dual boot configuration for testing and development. The Second Vostro is running Server 203 for testing enterprise options and running a print server. the fourth machine is a legacy business desktop for testing performance on older hardware.

The whole set up is controlled via a single mouse and keyboard using the virtual keyboard and mouse software Synergy. This allows me to scroll to the edge of the monitor of my mac and then be in control of the machine to the right of it. It is not always totally seamless and to get it to work smoothly on Vista it needs to be run as an administrative user and disable the godawful UAC.

My First Season Pass

James Kellerman

The spring season pass at my local ski area, Mt Hood Meadows, is only $99. Considering that a day lift ticket at the weekend is $54 it seems a no brainer. The season so far has been fairly disappointing and I am hoping that we get a bunch more snow and some blue skies so that I can make the most of my $99 investment. Got a lot of practice to put in if I am going to catch up with my brother.
