This sounds like a great idea. I used to love watching MST3K a show in which three characters would sit in front of a terrible movie and have a running commentary of jokes. This is the same concept except you just have to download the audio track, with them riffing on it it and stick the dvd on at the same time. Its like a directors commentary except actually funny and worth listening to. The first movie they are doing is the Patrick Swayze masterpiece Roadhouse. A major plus is the files are regular DRM free MP3 files woohoo, the world sees sense, or at least a small part of it does. Former Host and Writer of MST3K Launches RiffTrax: via Slashdot

Sunset Ride

James Kellerman

Took a sunset ride around Portland after watching "A Scanner Darkly" at the cinema. This is probably the pick of the bunch from the flickr set but there are a couple more over at flickr.com/photos/starshun. Need to get a lightweight tripod for all these night shots, ot else the lovely new Nikon 18-200 with VR, it would be the only lens I would ever need cary for the D70. A little out of my price range at the moment though.

I think I should get little stickers of cars to put on my bike, like fighter pilots for each of the insanely expensive cars I race through town against. So far I have managed to show a clean set of wheels to the following.

  • 1 Porsche 911 GT3
  • 1 Ferrari 360 Modena
  • Uncounted Mustangs, Camaros and other large American things, they don't really count.

Greatest 500 Albums of All Time

James Kellerman

This is probably pretty old but Rolling Stone has a list of the greatest 500 albums of all time. It seems rather too focused on the 60's with 4 beatles albums in the top 10. There is also not a huge diversity of artists in the Top 100 with many artists appearing several times. Allofmp3.com my favourite download service, largely because it has absolutely no device crippling DRM associated with the music, has conveniently listed all 500 albums. I am now going through my music collection and filling in some of the gaps in both genre and era with some of those greatest albums. Check it out at Rolling Stone and get them at allofmp3.com if you are so inclined

Great animated chart showing the growth of obesity in America over the last 20 years. Its shocking to see just how recent most of the growth has been. In some states more than 25% of the adult population have BMI's over 30, regarded as obese. The health impact of that level of obesity will be immense, from diabetes through artherosclerosis to heart attacks. I can imagine that the associated costs to society, both medical costs and lost productivity, sick days etc, will be very high. In the same way that smokers now pay suficient tax through the purchase of ciggarettes to offset the cost of health issues (at least in the UK) perhaps we should find a way to do the same with obesity. It is difficult to conceive of how you might tax fat, but it might be neccessary sooner rather than later. For your interest my BMI is currently 24.5, just inside the "normal weight" category. If I wanted to join the obese club I would have to put on 45 lbs or 20.5 kg, thats a lot of burgers and beer. If you want to calculate yours there are a million place on the web and here is one http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ If you are feeling brave leave your BMI in the comments, that includes you Dan. Me and my ridiculous hangover took a trip up to the high desert of Oregon on Saturday. We went to the beautiful Metolius river near a town called Sisters. Incredibly peaceful, gently flowing through meadows and pine groves also unfortunately incredibly cold. The river is polular with fly fisherman though certainly not because its easy to catch fish there! As ever check out more pictures over at flickr.

Fortune Cookies

James Kellerman

Went for Dim Sum at lunch today and both Hayden and I received this fairly prescient fortune in our fortune cookies.
You shouldn't overspend at the moment. Frugality is important.
We opened a third cookie to make sure, bit it was jsut a vague warning of being attacked by sharks on a thursday afternoon.

Here is an awesome image compiling hundreds of logos from web 2.0 companies. Some great work in there, take a look and if you have some favourites let me know. It's been around the blogosphere a hundred times, but as I am currently designing a logotype for our software startup it is proving fairly inspirational. There is actually a nice breakdown and discussion of the typefaces used over at fontshop.com

Smoking Power Adapter

James Kellerman

My power adapter for my Apple Powerbook started smoking today, not a good sign. In fury I threw the delinquent device into the trash, before it could pass on its dangerous habits to my laptop itself. I am now $79.00 worse off and it doesn't do anything more exciting than the last one except not smoke and attempt to fry my laptop.

Singapore gov condemns blogger for expressing opinions

James Kellerman

I try not to post too much about Singapore anymore as I tend to get very wound up by their particularly insidious brand of "democracy" but this is a fantastic example of the sort of control freakery that is regularly exercised there. The most damaging consequence of these kinds of actions is that it has a chilling effect on all those people looking for a way to speak out, creating a society afraid of saying the wrong thing. Geekgeek says,
"mr brown" [Ed.: aka Lee Kin Mun], Singapore's most famous blogger, has been writing a weekly column for a local Singaporean newspaper called "Today". Recently, one of his columns was more critical than the powers-that-rule liked. They issued a statement through the press secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts, and sternly chastised Mr. Brown for having expressed anti-government views. Not surprisingly, a few days later, Mr Brown posted a notice saying that his column had been suspended by Today newspaper.
Here's a snip from the government representative's statement:
It is not the role of journalists or newspapers in Singapore to champion issues, or campaign for or against the Government. (...) If a columnist presents himself as a non-political observer, while exploiting his access to the mass media to undermine the government’s standing with the electorate, then he is no longer a constructive critic, but a partisan player in politics.

Long Weekend

James Kellerman

Its been a long weekend and a while since I wrote anything, so this is a bit of a filler post until something more exciting comes along. Most people here took a 4 day weekend, with the 4th falling on a Tuesday and who was I to argue. Had my first 4th of july, Independence day, in the USA yesterday. Hung out by the lake ate bbq and went to see fireworks on the columbia river. Managed to find a superb location to watch them on the 2nd floor of a condo that was just being built right on the river side. Involved a little bit of scaffold climbing, but all the better for it. Fireworks were pretty cool, certainly threw a lot of explosives into the sky even if it wasn't the most creative display I have ever seen. Managed to do a little shopping out here, doing my best not to succumb to the Portland fashion scene or lack of it, going back to London is going to be a shock. Threw together a design for my friend Samuel over the weekend to use for an event he is running. Doing a kind of personal expose thing on the Apprentice TV show with another of the apprentices from the show. You can check it out at uncut.samueljudah.com.

Originally uploaded by jkprime. Went out last night to get some pictures of the sunset over the city and stumbled across the biweekly Portland fire dancing event. Located under the freeway, it has a very cool urban backdrop to some great performances. I took a lot of photos, unfortunately without a tripod, but some came out pretty well. The guy that runs the fire dancing school here, has asked to use some of the pictures. Anyway feel free to check out the full set at flickr.

One of the many reasons I love Wikipedia

James Kellerman

Wikipedia has an entry dedicated to a List of unusual deaths, you wont find this kind of fantastic information in Britanica.

Here are some of the more interesting entries.

The Root of all Evil

James Kellerman

One of the bravest and most eye opening TV series of the year. Over two programs Richard Dawkins looks at how faith is at the root of much of modern conflict. Not just Islam but Christianity and Judaism. Some of the most frightening moments are the interviews with the evangelical Christians. This is essential viewing, particularly in view of the various conflicts spanning the globe. Richard Dawkins bravery in standing up for rationality and the power of the human mind over superstition should be applauded. Its available on Google Video in two parts. Part 1 Part 2

Floating

James Kellerman

It is ridiculously hot here at the moment 100 deg F thats 38 of your very sensible metric celsius. In order to survive the heat we hit the river for the up and coming extreme sport of floating. This fast growing activity involves acquiring a bunch of cheap rubber boats or inner tubes and a cooler full of beer, and then floating for 3 hours down the river, through the occasional bumpy water bit |(rapids in technical speak). It is a fairly redneck activity, lots of coors light and pick up trucks, and I was totally unaware of the fact that you can even by coolers that float such as this one. I was handicapped by the fact that our awesome rubber craft did not have cup holders so paddling and holding the beer was very difficult, and as a consequence our navigation skills were severely impaired.

Great cover of crazy

James Kellerman

Caught this on the Rinse XFM's awesome radio show with James Hyman, and now pretty much my main connection to new and interesting music. The USA seems to be 24 hour classic rock and country with a little punk thrown in here and there. Pretty sure this is unreleased and non-commercial so download and enjoy.
