Seatac wifi hell

James Kellerman

WTF I cant actually sign up for the Cingular operated wifi at the airport, because I don't have a valid US address and credit card. Its a fucking airport, don't they expect international travelers! In other news my flight has been delayed 3 hours, and I hate BA.

I need to write this down or else I will probably give in later in the year and buy a MacBookPro. I am not that impressed, its hardly a radical change in many important ways. The battery life is far from impressive, its not particularly light the remote control seems gimmicky and easily lost on a laptop. The design is attractive but hardly a huge step forward over the existing aluminium powerbooks and most importantly there is no performance improvement for all the apps I used day to day. Photoshop, Illustrator & Dreamweaver. As Adobe has just announced there will be no universal binary of its apps until CS3, I will hold out until then and wait for apple to include Intel's next generation mobile processor Merom, which should improve both battery life and performance. Of course waiting 9 months will also help me save enough money to actually buy one.

The Singapore Judiciary

James Kellerman

Having spent the last year in Singapore, I feel a great deal of respect for Dr Chee. He has recently been imprisoned for calling into doubt the independence of the judiciary. The Singapore government has often used the judiciary to suppress political dissent, including the most basic forms of political dialogue. The following is a good summary of Dr Chee's case and some of the events that lead to his arrest. It is slightly long but it is worth a read as it shows how insidious an imbalanced judiciary can be.

It has been said before and shown in many places that you cannot have a true democracy without freedom of speech. That is what makes these cases so destructive, it gives the illusion of a democracy, but the reality is quite different

Submissions (Revised with additional references) As the AG has preferred a charge against me, I believe I am entitled to a trial here I can call witnesses to demonstrate the truth of my tatements and to document with precision how the courts in Singapore have been used by the PAP Government to maintain its chokehold on the country.

I have said before I will not run away. I am here to face my accuser and the very people whom I have criticised. I am here to speak the ruth, whatever the consequences may bring. f you are going to charge me for contempt of court, at least have the ecency to allow me the opportunity to defend myself. There is othing honorable in a fight wherein you bind and incapacitate your opponent.

Defamation without trial

My iPod has died!

James Kellerman

AGGGGHHHHHhHHHHHhhhhhh what lousy timing I just bought some great Shure e4c head phones that were on crazy discount out here, and now my iPod had thrown in the towel before they even arrive. I only hope apple announce something exciting and cheap before I leave here next Tuesday or I may be forced to pick up a new video iPes.

Got out this afternoon on a beautiful day for a 7 mile hike in South West Washington. It was a lovely quiet hike along a creek, completely unspoilt with fantastic clear green water and the sunlight filtering through the trees. Would be amazing in the summer when you can leap off the bridges into the cool clean water. I managed to take quite a few photos but as ever with forest hikes there really isn't a great deal of light and without a tripod many of them came out less than ideal. I will get the best of them uploaded to flickr over the coming days. This would be a whole hell of a lot easier if there was a plugin for aperture that let me send directly to flickr. This and all the other performance issues are making me think of switching back to iPhoto. Its fantastic here that you can get out of the city and in an hour be in beautiful wilderness with only the occasional person on the trail. Certainly cleared out the system after several days of fairly hard evenings including a ridiculously late St Patrick Day party. There is certainly something great about the fatigue you feel after a long days hike in the outdoors, a kind of fresh tiredness that is worlds away from the nervous exhaustion of a hard day at work. Its been a hectic weekend and I will add more about it as I recover from the events I should be writing about.

Wine Tasting in Oregon

James Kellerman

Got out and discovered a great way of kicking a St Patricks Day Hangover. Go out wine tasting in Pinot country. Hayden and I managed to drag ourselves out of Portland and on to the road to wine country. First we went to the Lange Winery to sample their Pinot Noirs and Pinot Gris, flollowed by Tori Mor whose very good Pinot Noir was spoiled by the worst sort of wine snobbery from the staff. Unfortunately it is not the done thing to reach across the tasting counter and knock their heads against the table but it sure was tempting. From Tori Mor we headed to Archery Summit via some lovely llamas which seem to be a fairly popular animal out here, though I have yet to figure out precisely why. Archery Summit was considerably more expensive $15 rather than the usual $5 tasting fee, but their wines were very good, and probably the best Pinot Noir of the day, though at $150 a bottle you should hope for something special. Very pleasant staff at the tasting room which considering its premium nature was a nice surprise, no violence required here. A quick dash was required to make it across to the Domaine Drouhin winery before the 4pm closing of the tasting room. More great pinot but was beginning to feel fairly old compared to the 22 year old girl that was pouring the wines. The Argyle winery was the only disappointment of the day, all the wines there tasting slightly wet and indifferent compared to the quality of those up to that point. After Argyle it was a short trip down the road to the Pinot Station, a kind of tasting fair. Once you had bought a glass you could wander the various wineries that had set up stall there, tasting the produce, all the while listening to the slightly overly loud band and marveling at the sheer number of people there. As we were leaving we were accosted by a couple of women who had obviously been there for some time, considering how drunk they appeared. Hayden and I barely managed to escape the encounter unmolested but we did manage to snag a bottle of good Pinot Gris.

Need more practice

James Kellerman

Had a good night of pure Americana, pizza, pool and beer. Love the way this picture came out on my phone, great colours and the triangle in the foreground just works. Pure accident of course much like my pool playing.

New Arrivals

James Kellerman

I thought I should write a little welcome note to two recent arrivals in the world. Welcome Finn Taylor son of My friends Dan & Ali Welcome Bethan Rodley daughter of my friends Michael & Mary Rodley The internet being the wonderful thing that it is, this record might one day help these two find connections between their parents and fill in information and relationships in a way that was never possible in the past. Wishing you all the best and I hope when you are old enough to use the internet (probably in 6 months time), I can still figure out how to use it.

Coffee & Doughnuts

James Kellerman

Thats my new diet, which probably means my body is being killed slowly by caffeine and sugar. On the upside the coffee is really good in portland, particularly stumptown. The doughnuts are all about Voodoo Doughnut a fantastic hole in the wall that is only open from 10pm to 10am, which just adds to the allure.

I am slowly settling into Portland and getting over the jet lag, though I am still surprisingly happy to jump out of bed at 5am! Had a great day of American cuisine yesterday and it may well go down as the highest cholestrol day of my life! Started out with a great fried breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausages and toast followed by a fantastic philly cheese steak at one of the carts in downtown. Its been a long time since I had a really good cheese steak and it was a great reunion. This left only dinner time to go, what else but the great American hamburger. Stanich's is the classic dive, college sports on the TV, cheerful and overweight waitresses sports memorabillia on the wall and a fantastic burger. Voted Portland's best on numerous occasions the special was damn good. It even featured my favorite burger topping, fried egg. Pickles are put on the side in case you don't like them, no danger for me so they went right into that big old burger, and then right into me! All this washed down with a jug of fantastic micro brewed weissbier. Looks like its back to muelsi and salad tomorrow!

Coast Starlight Amtrak

James Kellerman

On Wednesday morning I boarded the Coast Starlight Amtrak train headed from Seattle to Portland. The train is the classic American double decker finished in polished metal fantastically evocative of the 70's with an observation car that was truly fantastic. I met a really nice girl while waiting for the train and we spent the journey in the observation car watching the American landscape roll by, counting the number of old pick ups rusting in the back of many homes and admiring the beauty of the cascades. It was a surprisingly quick four hour journey and I was a little disappointed that I wasn't doing the full 32 hour journey down to LA. Its been fantastic traveling on my own, beholden to no one, meeting random people and generally having a great time.I need to work on my writing skills to add to my portfolio as a scientist/designer/engineer/technologist/entrepeneur.
